Re: Ammo Suggestions
You should get a rifle.
.22 and 9mm is still dirt cheap at walmart. Get it while you can. |
Re: Ammo Suggestions
Sounds like you've got the handgun/up-close and personal ammo covered, I'd invest in a .308 rifle.
*Battle rifle - FAL by DSArms or an M1A (6 or 7 mags for either) *Bolt Action Rem700 Police Sniper edition with a quality scope www.aimsurplus.com - military surplus .308 to practice with, Black Hills .308 for accurate, long range shooting Tinman is right - get a .22 at Walmart (stainless) - $219.00 and some Butler Creek steel lip mags. Might want to go with a decent 4x32 scope as well, I have a Nikon As for the 9mm - the above link is looking like $105.00 for 1000 rds (+shipping, no tax) |
Re: Ammo Suggestions
GET MORE!!!
you can get 550 rounds of .22 ammo for like $9 at Wal-Mart. that said, at least get another 10 boxes. I'm sure you'll get advice here to have thousands of rounds per caliber. At least get as much as the cheap stuff you can first, then build on the rest. I would say no less than 500 rounds each. |
Re: Ammo Suggestions
.22 makes for great practice ammo. Load up and you can hone your shooting skills for a couple of bucks per day, regardless of price increases in the future

If you don't mind, what size boxes are the 12 ga? IF they are 25 round boxes, that gives you 150 rounds. UP that amount at least another 50 round (2 boxes), though adding 150 more rounds would not hurt. And just so you know, you don't need to go out and drop major money in one fell swoop. Be a bargain hunter. Almost every gun shop has a 'discount' table. Sometimes they include ammo. And don't hesitate to ask the man behind the counter 'do you have any cheaper 12 ga ammo?', because you never know what the answer might be. Bump the 9mm up another 250 rounds (your choice). I have a tendency to make SOME of my ammo either Black Talon or Federal Hydra Shock. Both are packed 20 rounds per box and are SUPER expensive, so you don't need a lot. One or two boxes. I would suggest in your .357 Mag. Speaking of the two revolver calibers, consider adding another 300 rounds in .38 spl. YOU can use them in your .357 but your wife could also use them in her .38, so they can do double duty. Everyone is suggesting a 'battle rifle'. Allow me to make a different suggestion. Go to your local news stand and find the current issue of 'Surplus Rifles'. For less than $10, you can get a lot of info AND a lot of ads selling these same rifles. Just because it was used to fight in WWI or WWII, does NOT mean it's still not a great rifle. Or go to www.classicarms.us that currently has numerous rifles, both bolt action and semi auto for under $200. Realize that this type of a choice is never easy. The MORE research you do, the easier it is to make your choice. A bolt action mauser or SMLE or nagant can all be had for UNDER $200. No I don't work for them. Though I have purchased pistols from them and have been nothing but happy with the pistols AND the prices. And don't stop asking questions. HERE, at the local gun shop, at the local gun show and via websites you visit. Get as much information as you can PRIOR to spending your hard earned dollars for that rifle. |

Re: Ammo Suggestions
Yes I live in Queens (for now anyway) & I shoot quite often usually about once a week, gonna need to work on that as there closing the range I use most  . And my stock was mainly built with the 2 for 1 system = going shooting buy 2x the ammo I want shoot halv put the rest on the shelf. I also purchased ammo when it was cheaper just to have, as seen with some of the calibers that I dont even own guns in yet.

I've been using a 1.1-1 ratio to build up my stock so it goes pretty slowly. |
Re: Ammo Suggestions
I would say probally about 80% of my stock is packaged as such in whatever style ammo can I have fit it to best with markings on all sides a color code system for the main calibers & P-touch lables as well with Cal.round count & purchae date. Any of the smaller quaninties & stuff I really don't use often are mainly in cans that denote what cal. they are.

Re: Ammo Suggestions
Will the ammo in my locked cabinet
still work after all this time? Shot some of the 9mm a few years ago, but then the local firing range closed. Haven't shot any of the other stuff in 15+ years. When I was a young man, an old fart friend of mine gave me a dozen or so boxes of WWII era .45 ACP hardball, apparently he had cases of it. The rounds had to be over thirty years old at the time. Well, my Colt smoke-stacked a few times, but none of that old ammo failed to fire. dtnwn |

They said as long as it was stored in a cool, dry place, it should work regardless of how long it was stored - they even added that some ammo from WW2 has shown up and fires fine. HOWEVER - when TSHTF - use the old stuff up first! :D |
Re: Ammo Suggestions
Someone on another thread mentioned
silencers. Well, that's not for me, BUT In scenarios some of you folks think up, stealth (relatively quiet shootin) could be handy. I noticed some boxes of .22 CB caps and .22 shorts in my ammo cabinet. Fergot I had 'em. |
Re: Ammo Suggestions
Hey this is fun.
I been on gold forums as long as there have been discussion forums. Ah ain't bored with my portfolio of gold stocks, but ah am bored with talkin about gold. I'm sure water has been discussed on this forum somewhere, but six wodkas down the hatch now, ahm not gonna go looking for da thread. So this is just for you that are concerned about having safe drinking water when dshtf, and who happen to read this thread. Google keywords [Big Berkey water filter] dtnwn |
Re: Ammo Suggestions
I quit reloading long ago,
and I don't see it on Lee's web site, but I started with a Lee Loader for 20ga, I think. Then I got a Lee Load All, which works fine, but I wasn't thrilled with the crimp. Maybe they are better today. I felt the crimp was too loose and after getting jostled the hull might open up enough for small shot to spill out. Then I got a MEC, which was very nice. Reloading, especially for hunters, is something to consider. dtnwn |
